NSRI The NSRI Station 2 boathouse is situated on the beach at Bakoven. The NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) is a non-profit organization that conduct sea rescues in South African waters. Founded in 1967, the Bakoven’s Station 2 is the oldest station in the country and has one of the fastest response times of about 10 minutes. The Bakoven rocks create an open channel through which rescue boats can be launched. Their fleet consists of a 6-metre inshore fast response “Mallards Swift” boats with two 90 horsepower Yamaha outboard engines. Station 2 has no direct vehicle access; therefore if any additional equipment is needed, it has to be carried down or even airlifted in extreme cases. In 1996 the base was named John Pattison base. Operations manager of the NSRI, Captain John Pattison was known to have a close relationship with the Bakoven station. |

Marika’s Restaurant This charming little Greek restaurant is situated in Bakoven, on Victoria road. With owners Marika and Frank at the head, the restaurant has a casual atmosphere, and can seat about 40 people. A relaxed family restaurant, it is definitely child friendly and the homemade ice-cream is a big favourite. A small front veranda area allows for al fresco dining on summer days. Greek home cooking is the order of the day and the Meze platter comes highly recommended. Other delicious fare on the menu includes vegetarian and seafood dishes, to be complemented by a hand picked selection of excellent local wines.
